With Revelation, the young heavy psychedelic rock group Virus produced one of best early progressive albums in Germany; indeed, it was a revelation! Their style was strongly influenced by Pink Floyd (David Gilmour) and Deep Purple (Jon Lord). The album had five long tracks. The title track included an instrumental classical adaptation of the Rolling Stones Paint It Black. Their instrumental work was even better on the 12 minute Endless Game. The varied album also had a more hard-rocking track named Burning Candle. Finally, Nur Noch Zwei Lichtiahre guided the listener into deep space, much like a mellow and matured Interstellar Overdrive. The album was recorded in Star Studios, Hamburg and produced by none other than Konrad Plank.
For Thoughts (1971), both Virus sound and the band itself had changed considerably. Only Krahe and Rieke were left from the original group. Bernd Hohmann had left for Weed. The new members were: Axel Nieling (drums), Jurgen Schafer (bass, vocals), Bernd Rosner (guitar) and Werner Vogt (bass, guitar, vocals). Gone were the psychedelic space-rock and long instrumental workouts. Virus now played a more mainstream, rough and heavy blues-rock, not at all bad, but clearly inferior to their debut. They also contributed to the great Pilz album, Heavy Christmas (1971), before vanishing from the scene.

O Hurdy Gurdy é uma mitológica banda dinamarquesa que surgiu em 1967 na cidade de Kobenhavn. Influenciados pelos power trios ingleses que estavam fazendo história naquela época, notoriamente o Cream, o grupo acrescentou ao peso característico do formato uma enorme dose de psicodelismo, construindo uma música bastante original.
O impacto em seu país foi marcante, com o conjunto alcançando reconhecimento e sucesso junto aos jovens, que marcavam presença em massa aos seus concorridos shows. Isso motivou os caras a levar o grupo mais a sério, mudando-se para Londres de mala e cuia no final de 1968. Lá entraram em contato com o manager do cantor Donovan, Ashley Kozak, que descolou um contrato com a gravadora CBS.
O único registro do Hurdy Gurdy é extremamente difícil de ser encontrado. Raríssimo, o álbum apresenta um hard psicodélico bastante interessante, com passagens que lembram a música indiana, principalmente pelo uso de cítaras e tablas, como na fenomenal Peaceful Open Space.
Eis um disco que, se você encontrar na sua frente, não pode deixar passar.
Recomendadíssimo.

First Loss es el único álbum de Murphy Blend, otra agrupación que merece encontrarse en el sitial de las grandes olvidadas. Formada en Berlín, estuvo integrada por Wolf-Rodriger Uhlig (órgano, clavecín y piano), Wolfgang Rumler (guitarra y voz), Andreas Scholz (bajo) y Achim Schmidt (batería y voz). Su único álbum fue grabado entre el 2 y el 4 de diciembre de 1970 en München y editado en CD en 1991 por Ohrwaschl. El disco es una mezcla de sicodelia, con heavy rock, melodías clásicas y blues. La incorporación de piezas clásicas de J. S. Bach con mucha percusión y órgano Hammond nos remite a Tetragon. Pueden también hacerse referencias a la primera época de Jane. La banda tuvo corta duración, y tras su disolución, el tecladista emigró a la banda Hanuman y el bajista a Blackwater Park.

Skid Row was a Dublin blues-rock band of the late 1960s and early 1970s fronted by Brendan Brush Shiels (born 1952 in Dublin, Ireland). It was guitarist Gary Moores first professional band.
The band was formed in 1967, comprising Brush Shiels on bass guitar, Noel (Nollaig) Bridgeman (currently with Van Morrison) on drums, Phil Lynott on vocals, and Bernard (Bernie) Cheevers on lead guitar. Cheevers was replaced by the 16-year-old Gary Moore in 1969, and the band recorded a Single, Misdemeanour Dream Felicity/New Places, Old Faces, for the Irish Song Records label (the only recording of Lynott with Skid Row). Later that year Shiels dropped Lynott from the line-up, converting Skid row to a power trio by making Moore the lead vocalist. By way of compensation, he taught Lynott to play bass, and Lynott went on to international fame as founder, bassist and vocalist for Thin Lizzy. The band recorded a second single for Song, Saturday Morning Man/Mervyn Aldridge. These two singles, plus three tracks from a BBC recording, were issued on the Hux label as Live and on Song in April 2006.
Skid Row played support to many of the great rock groups of the sixties, including Fleetwood Mac. Moore was influenced by the Fleetwood Mac guitarist Peter Green, who was in turn impressed by Moores guitar playing and introduced him to the Columbia record company. The band released its first album Skid, in October 1970. A second LP, entitled 34 Hours - so entitled because it took them a mere 34 hours to record it - was released in 1971. Moore left the band in late 1971 (he was replaced by Paul Chapman, later of UFO) and later played with Thin Lizzy. The rest of their recorded material was released in 1990 and 91, about the time when Moore released his Still Got the Blues LP.
Although the group had little success outside Ireland and the UK (Skid reached no. 30 on the UK album charts), its influence on Irish rock music (and consequently on rock music in general) was considerable.
In 1987 Moore sold the name Skid Row to the American heavy metal band for $35,000. Shiels has said that he has always been unhappy at the group stealing their name, and said of manager Doc Magee, he could be Doc Marten for all I know...but hes going to get a kick up the arse..

Although forming in Manchester, England, in 1965 under the banner of New Religion, Stackwaddy first came to attention at the 1969 Progressive Blues Festival in Buxton with their boisterous brand of British 60s-styled R&B.
Signing with John Peels Dandelion label, they released the single Roadrunner in 1970, followed by their self-titled debut album in 1971. Led by singer John Knail, they developed a reputation as an excellent live act, despite Knails habit of throwing bottles or assaulting crowds who were not appreciative of their efforts. Another single, You Really Got Me, followed in 1972, as did their second album, Bugger Off, a title which saw it banned by several shops. Dwindling success led to the bands demise although Barnham did revive the group with a new lineup of Mike Sweeny (vocals), Wayne Jackson (bass), and Kevin Wilkinson (drums) from 1973-1976.
Stack Waddys debut album is one of the must hear discs of the early 1970s, an uncompromising roar that might cavort through that shell-shocked no mans land that sprawls between Captain Beefheart and the Edgar Broughton Band, but which winds up defiantly beholden to absolutely nothing else youve ever heard — one reason, perhaps, why the group vanished with so little trace. Recorded live in the studio (or thereabouts), Stack Waddy is a blurring blend of brutal band originals and deliciously mauled covers. Beefhearts Sure Nuff N Yes I Do is an unblinking highlight, while raw takes on Suzie Q and Road Runner remind us of the groups mid-60s genesis on the Manchester R&B scene. Theres also a version of Jethro Tulls Love Story that comes close to topping the Sensational Alex Harvey Band in terms of lascivious power and ferocity. Certainly John Knail takes no prisoners as he howls his way through and, while Stack Waddy holds back from completely recreating the live band experience (there are no breaking bottles, for a start), still this is one of those few albums that genuinely requires you to wear protective clothing.
If you thought Stack Waddys debut album was a brute, then their follow-up is positively antisocial. Titled with such a glaring eye for controversy that many U.K. record stores simply refused to stock it (but would the band countenance a name change? Would they hell!), Bugger Off! picked up where its predecessor left off, and rampaged on from there. Covers of Zappas Willy the Pimp and the Kinks You Really Got Me might have seemed a little obvious, but both are battered down with such a glorious lack of finesse that its impossible to object — anybody familiar with, respectively, Juicy Lucy and the Hammersmith Gorillas versions of the same songs will come in with at least a vague idea of what to expect, but thats about it. Hoochie Coochie Man is even more disheveled, and when John Peels liner notes reminisce on the groups insistence on recording live, you can tell hes not necessarily looking back with any fondness. On one occasion, he suggested they do a little overdubbing. The bands response to his words would become the albums title. Highly Recommended !!
